Viking Experience at the Navan Fort
Year 6 travelled to Armagh on a windy autumn day to meet Vilk the Vicious and his friend Olaf the ship-builder at their new home, stolen from an Irish family who had been raided. They proudly demonstrated their many weapons and explained the best way to use them. The pupils found out how to make the most effective shield wall to prevent marauding Saxons from breaking through.
Next we met Paul who talked about the conflict between the Monks and the Vikings. The children modelled clothes from that era, including chain mail headgear worn by the Warriors. Finally the pupils experienced writing in runes using quills and ink. A messy process but useful to help understand the immense skill that the monks had in writing their holy books.
It was, yet again, a fantastic trip with lots of information learned and plenty to bring back to school to enrich our future lessons.
